The Aadhaar card is the most important identity document in India today. It is a 12-digit unique identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to residents of India. Aadhaar acts as proof of identity and address and is widely used for banking, government subsidies, taxation, mobile connections, and more.

This guide explains everything you need to know about Aadhaar, including how to apply, update, and manage your Aadhaar card, step by step.

What Is Aadhaar?

Aadhaar is a biometric and demographic identification system.

It contains your:

  • Name
  • Date of Birth
  • Gender
  • Address
  • Mobile number
  • Biometric data: fingerprint scans and iris scans

It is unique to every individual and is recognized across India for authentication purposes.

Key Points:

  • It is mandatory for certain services like filing income tax returns, linking bank accounts, and government schemes.
  • It is not proof of citizenship, but only proof of identity and residence in India.
